SVG Graphics

General Information

Some of my pages contain graphics that are calculated on the fly, they are embedded Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG). The SVG format is supported natively by the Mozilla family of browsers, FireFox and SeaMonkey. Internet Explorer 9 and higher also support SVG.

The advantage of SVG is that it prints rather well, compared to bitmapped pictures (e.g., JPEG, GIF, or PNG).

The browser does not treat the embedded pictures the same way as images that are actually references to a separate file (you cannot hit the right mouse button and select "View Image" or "Save Image As..."). In order to extract the file, follow these steps:

  1. Save the page from your browser in HTML format.
  2. Open the file in a text editor, e.g. Windows Editor/Notepad
  3. Locate the opening tag of the SVG picture: use the search function of your editor to search for "<svg " and delete everything before that tag.
  4. Insert <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?> before that opening tag.
  5. Insert xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" version="1.1" after the opening <svg:
    <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" version="1.1"
  6. Locate the ending tag of the SVG picture: search for "</svg>" and delete everything after that tag.
  7. Save the result under a file name with the extension .svg
